My first guess is global warming did it, especially given the catastrophic changes which have apparently occurred over the last billion years, almost .00001% of which time has been occupied by evil humans who are fucking things up.
My second guess is that most people are stupid enough to believe that because most people are totally clueless when it comes to anything remotely related to science, and especially science bigger than their back yard.
My third guess is that this is recognized by most scientists, which resulted in the funniest line in the story:
"The moon's not going to disappear and its shrinkage won't affect the Earth in any way, Watters stressed."
